Course Topics
Section 1 – Life Planning for Retirement
Every person has a different vision for their retirement years. You may want to travel, pursue hobbies, or dedicate yourself to volunteer efforts or part-time work. However, to turn your vision for retirement into a reality, you need to have clear goals. Our Retirement Planning Today course begins with a series of brief, individual exercises designed to get you started thinking about how you envision your retirement lifestyle. We understand that you see your retirement years in a different way than previous generations, which has changed the entire retirement planning process. To help you reach your retirement goals, we embrace a more progressive approach to retirement planning in this course.
Section 2 – Retirement Needs and Expenses
Do you know how much money you’ll really need to sustain your desired retirement lifestyle? While data from the Employee Benefit Research Institute indicates that 66% of workers are very or somewhat confident they will have enough money to live comfortably through their retirement, less than 40% had actually tried to calculate how money they’ll really need!
The second section of our course features exercises designed to help you determine how much money you will need to fund your lifestyle both today and in retirement. We’ll also examine whether your retirement expectations are sustainable based on your future projected income.
Section 3 – Retirement Roadblocks and Mistakes
Do you know the 10 biggest retirement planning traps and how to avoid them? In this section, we’ll discuss common retirement roadblocks, as well as identifying 11 strategies you can use to save money on your taxes. We’ll even help you spot hidden fees and expenses that can eat into your ability to save.
Section 4 – Retirement Income Sources
There are so many ways to save and invest for retirement that it can be hard to know which approach is best for your needs. In this section, we’ll discuss the advantages and disadvantages of a variety of retirement saving vehicles. We’ll address concerns such as whether you should convert your traditional IRA to a Roth IRA, how to make decisions regarding your employer-sponsored retirement plan, and how to manage Social Security benefits.
Section 5 – Retirement Plan Distributions
Once you retire, you’ll need to make a number of crucial―and often irreversible―decisions about how to use the funds in your retirement plans. In this section, we’ll look at different strategies you can use to withdraw money from your retirement plans while maintaining financial flexibility. We’ll also discuss strategies you can use to minimize taxes on your income in retirement, as well as the rules covering early withdrawals from retirement funds.
Section 6 – Investments
In this in-depth section, we’ll discuss cash accounts, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, unit investment trusts, individually managed accounts and tax-deferred annuities. We’ll also cover important factors to consider before you invest and spotlight five strategies you can use to manage investment risks.
Section 7 – Risk Management and Asset Protection
Risk management and asset protection should be part of any comprehensive retirement plan. In this section of the course, we’ll look at strategies designed to protect you from a large financial loss during retirement. You’ll learn about specific questions you need to ask before buying insurance, and also how to analyze the many aspects of long-term health care, including the chances you will require long-term care, how much such care may cost, whether you should buy long-term care insurance, and alternatives to purchasing coverage. In addition, we’ll discuss the many different types of life insurance and how to select a policy that fits with the needs of you and your family.
Section 8 – Estate Planning
Estate planning involves making a number of personal decisions that affect you, your family and your loved ones. In addition, recent tax law changes have further complicated estate planning. In this section of the course, we discuss approaches you can take to plan for the future.
We’ll highlight strategies and techniques you can use to minimize or eliminate income, gift and estate taxes, expenses, delays, legal challenges and a shortage of liquid assets after your death. In addition, we’ll address the best strategy for holding joint ownership of property (or other assets) based on your specific situation.
